Traffic Fine Fees for 2026
Traffic fine amounts for 2026 have increased significantly compared to previous years due to both the inflation adjustment rate and additional legal regulations. In this comprehensive guide, you can find the current fines for a wide range of violations, including speeding, running a red light, driving under the influence, driving without a license, operating an uninspected vehicle, using fake license plates, drifting, and social media posts.
Simply looking at the traffic fine table is often not enough; because in many cases, penalties may also include demerit points, license suspension, vehicle impoundment, and even criminal proceedings under the Turkish Penal Code. This article aims to help drivers act more responsibly on the road by explaining both the current amounts and the background of these penalties in simple, easy-to-understand language.
2026 Traffic Fine Rates
Traffic fine amounts in Turkey for 2026 have been updated based on the revaluation rate (25.49%) published in the Official Gazette. Additionally, with Law No. 7574 dated February 27, 2026, significantly higher fines—exceeding the standard increase—have been introduced for critical violations such as running a red light, driving under the influence, using a fake license plate, driving a vehicle without a license plate, and driving without a valid license.
According to the Highway Traffic Law and relevant regulations, traffic violations are not limited to monetary fines alone. They may also result in penalty points, the temporary or permanent revocation of a driver’s license, the suspension of the vehicle from traffic, mandatory psycho-technical evaluation, and in some cases, imprisonment under the Turkish Penal Code. Therefore, when reviewing the 2026 traffic fine rates, these penalties must also be considered.
How Much Have Traffic Fines Increased in 2026?
The revaluation rate announced for 2026 was set at 25.49%. Traffic fine amounts for many standard violations (such as failing to wear a seatbelt, exceeding the speed limit by a certain margin, or driving an uninsured vehicle) have increased by a rate close to this figure. For example, the fine for failing to wear a seatbelt, which was 993 TL in 2025, has risen to 1,246 TL in 2026.
However, for some violations, the increase was not limited to the revaluation rate; additional and significant hikes were implemented through legislative changes. Notable changes in this context include raising the red-light violation fine from 2,719 TL to 5,000 TL through a tiered system, increasing the fine for using a fake license plate from 58,104 TL to 140,000 TL, raising the fine for driving a vehicle without a license plate to 46,000 TL, and the fine for driving without a license to 40,000 TL are among the most notable changes in this context.

New Traffic Fines and Changes in Legislation
As of 2026, not only have traffic fine amounts been updated, but the definitions and scope of violations have also been significantly revised. One such change is the classification of “aggressive driving” offenses under a separate and more severe category. Behaviors such as persistently tailgating another vehicle, cutting it off, or getting out of the car and approaching the other driver have been subject to an administrative fine of 180,000 TL and a 60-day license suspension.
Another notable change is the enforcement of penalties against those who share traffic violations—such as speeding, weaving, or drifting—on social media. Sharing such footage on social platforms can now result in fines of up to 25,000 TL; the footage serves as evidence, and retroactive action can be taken against the driver. Additionally, alongside the requirement for QR-coded license plates, any action that renders the license plate unreadable, as well as the use of counterfeit or APP license plates, is subject to very severe penalties of up to 140,000 TL.

Speeding and Radar Fines 2026
Speeding is one of the most common violations on both urban and interstate roads and is a leading cause of fatalities. As of 2026, traffic fines are applied on a sliding scale based on how much the speed limit is exceeded. Exceeding the limit by up to 10% is considered within the tolerance range, while any violation exceeding 10% results in a fine and penalty points.
Since radar checks are integrated with the EDS (Electronic Monitoring System), violations are typically detected along with a photo and speed reading. For this reason, objections such as “I didn’t see the radar” or “the police didn’t stop me” often do not hold up. Additionally, for drivers who have committed speed violations exceeding 30% within the past year, license suspension and a requirement for a psycho-technical evaluation are imposed if a certain number of repeat offenses is exceeded.

Penalties for Running a Red Light and Consequences for Repeated Offenses
With the start of 2026, a tiered penalty system for red light violations officially came into effect. The red light fine, which was 2,719 TL at the end of 2025, was first raised to 5,000 TL under Law No. 7574, and the penalty was set to double for each subsequent violation within the same year. As a result, traffic fines for drivers who frequently run red lights have risen to much more deterrent levels.
Under the new system, the first red light violation results in a 5,000 TL fine and 20 penalty points; if the specified number of repeat offenses is exceeded, the fine can rise to 15,000 TL, and by the sixth violation, it can reach up to 80,000 TL, triggering a process that may lead to the complete revocation of the driver’s license. For the 3rd, 4th, and 5th violations within the same year, the driver’s license can be suspended for 30, 60, and 90 days, respectively.

Penalty for Driving Without a License in 2026
Driving without a license is among the most severe traffic fines in 2026. Individuals who drive without a driver’s license or despite having their license revoked pose a significant risk not only to themselves but to all road users. For this reason, the law imposes both high monetary fines and additional penalties for driving without a license.
Under Law No. 7574, the penalty for driving without a license was increased to 40,000 TL as of 2026. If a person’s driver’s license has previously been revoked or canceled and they are caught driving during this period, the fine can rise to as much as 200,000 TL. If the vehicle owner is a different person, the vehicle owner who provided the vehicle to the unlicensed individual may also be subject to an administrative fine of the same amount.

Penalties for Driving Under the Influence and License Revocation Process
Since driving under the influence is one of the most critical violations that can lead to loss of life, traffic fines in this area were significantly increased in 2026. A three-tiered system of very high monetary fines is now applied to drivers found to have a blood alcohol level above 0.50
A driver caught driving under the influence for the first time is fined 25,000 TL, and their license is suspended for 6 months. For a second violation within five years, the fine increases to 50,000 TL, and the license is suspended for 2 years. For a third or subsequent offense, a fine of 150,000 TL is imposed, and the driver’s license is revoked for 5 years. The penalty for refusing a breathalyzer test or blood test has also been increased to 150,000 TL, and such refusal can trigger a 5-year license revocation.

Driving Without a Vehicle Inspection and Late Payment Fines
Vehicle inspection is a mandatory procedure that directly affects both the vehicle’s technical condition and road safety. Driving an uninspected vehicle on public roads is subject to an administrative fine of 2,719 TL as of 2026. While the fine is issued to the vehicle owner, the driver receives 10 penalty points on their license, and the vehicle may be towed to a secure location and removed from traffic.
If the inspection deadline is missed, you will not only face traffic fines but also pay a late fee equivalent to 5% of the inspection fee for each month of delay. Additionally, vehicles removed from traffic due to lack of inspection may be granted up to 7 business days to undergo the inspection. If the inspection is still not completed by the end of this period, or if the vehicle is put back on the road despite receiving an “unsafe” report during the inspection, the fine increases to up to 5,662 TL, and the vehicle is towed to a parking lot.

Fines for Failure to Wear a Seatbelt, Helmet, and Violation of the Safety Lane
The use of seat belts and helmets significantly reduces the risk of death and serious injury in the event of an accident. In 2026, the fine for not wearing a seatbelt is 1,246 TL, and the fine for a motorcycle driver or passenger not wearing a helmet is also 1,246 TL. Penalty points are also assigned for these violations; for example, 15 points for the seatbelt and 15 points for the helmet.
Violating the emergency lane, however, is subject to much harsher penalties. This behavior, which obstructs the passage of emergency vehicles such as ambulances, fire trucks, and police cars, is punishable by a fine of 11,631 TL as of 2026. Drivers who enter the emergency lane, especially in heavy traffic, are not only required to pay high traffic fines but also risk losing their license by accumulating penalty points.

Penalties for Drifting, Dangerous Driving, and Social Media Posts
Drifting, cutting in, and other violations classified under “dangerous driving” pose a serious risk of accidents on both urban and interurban roads. While the base fine for drifting was 58,217 TL in 2026, new regulations reported by sources such as Çapa Hukuk now impose administrative fines of up to 140,000 TL and a 60-day license suspension for the first offense for sudden changes in direction and drifting.
Traffic fines of approximately 58,104 TL are also imposed for behaviors such as weaving between vehicles or driving in an S-shaped pattern. Additionally, sharing videos or photos of such violations on social media is now considered a violation in itself. Sharing videos of weaving, drifting, or excessive speeding on social media platforms can result in fines of up to 25,000 TL, and the shared content can be used as evidence to take retroactive action against the driver.

Penalty for Using Unregistered or Counterfeit License Plates in 2026
A license plate is a vehicle’s identification, and every motor vehicle on the road must display a registered, legible license plate that meets barcode standards. As of 2026, the penalty for driving a vehicle without a license plate has been increased to 46,000 TL. Operating a registered vehicle without a license plate does not only result in high traffic fines; it can also lead to the vehicle and driver’s license being impounded for 30 days.
The penalty for using a counterfeit license plate or rendering a plate illegible is much more severe: 140,000 TL. This includes all instances such as APP plates, plates with altered characters, or plates that have been blacked out or covered. Additionally, using a fake license plate constitutes the crime of “forgery of official documents” under the Turkish Penal Code, carrying a potential prison sentence of 2 to 5 years.

Traffic Fine Inquiry and Payment Steps (e-Government)
Just as important as knowing the current traffic fine amounts is knowing when these fines are entered into the system and how to check them. This is because sometimes, for fines resulting from EDS or radar, you may not be aware of them because the notice hasn’t been received, and in such cases, late payment interest kicks in, causing the total debt to increase significantly.
Checking traffic fines via e-Government is quite convenient. You can use the “General Directorate of Security – Traffic Fine Inquiry by License Plate” service for this. You can instantly view all fine records, payment statuses, and any early payment discount amounts using your license plate number, Turkish ID number, and the information of the person registered on the vehicle registration. Similarly, you can view and pay your fine balances through the Revenue Administration’s Interactive Tax Office and the online/mobile banking channels of partner banks.
- e-Government > EGM > Traffic Fine Inquiry by License Plate
- Interactive Tax Office > Motor Vehicles > Traffic Fine Payment
- Banks’ online/mobile banking channels > Payments > Traffic Fines
Early Payment Discount and Traffic Fine Appeal Process
The early payment discount for traffic fines continues in 2026, providing a significant advantage for drivers. According to regulations, if you pay within 1 month (30 days) from the date the fine is notified to you, a 25% discount is applied to the fine amount. This discount is automatically applied regardless of the payment channel used (e-Government, tax office, bank, etc.).
If you believe the fine is incorrect, that you were not driving the vehicle, or that there was a technical error, you have the right to appeal. An appeal against a traffic fine must be filed with the Magistrate’s Court within the timeframes specified by law (typically 15 days) starting from the date of notification. If possible, including evidence such as EDS footage, witness statements, vehicle location records, or documents regarding license plate mix-ups in your appeal petition increases the likelihood of a favorable outcome.
- Payment within 1 month: 25% discount (e.g., a 5,000 TL fine is reduced to 3,750 TL)
- Right to appeal to the Criminal Court of First Instance: Within the legal timeframe following notification
